Superficial Radiotherapy (SRT)
This non-invasive skin cancer treatment harnesses X-rays to treat cancer without scarring, so it's a popular option, but it can only be used on certain cancers.
What Is Superficial Radiotherapy?
Superficial radiotherapy, or SRT, is a skin cancer technique that uses X-ray technology to destroy cancerous cells. Goodman Dermatology is one of only three practices in Atlanta with the SRT machine. Unlike many skin cancer treatments, which involve the surgical removal of cancerous cells, superficial radiotherapy is a non-invasive technique for skin cancer treatment. During the painless SRT treatment, X-ray energy is delivered to the affected area of the skin. The cancer cells absorb this energy and are destroyed as a result. Because of the simple and comfortable treatment process, this is a preferred skin cancer treatment. However, whether it can be used for a particular patient will depend on the size and location of the affected area. It can only be used for the following treatments:
Superficial Radiotherapy FAQs
The cost of your superficial radiotherapy treatment will vary depending on the extent of treatment necessary, and may be covered by insurance. At Goodman Dermatology, we understand that each patient is unique and deserves a personalized treatment plan. We can provide a more accurate cost for treatment after we assess your treatment goals and develop your treatment plan. During your consultation, we will discuss your needs and come up with an exact cost. To make our treatments more affordable for our patients, we are proud to offer financing options through CareCredit.
During the superficial radiotherapy treatment, there is no anesthesia necessary and you will be able to lie comfortably for the duration of the treatment. Once you are comfortably positioned, the SRT application device will be placed on the treatment area. You will not feel any discomfort as the treatment begins; SRT is completely painless. The superficial radiotherapy treatment session will take about half an hour to complete.
You may experience some soreness or redness in the skin following your SRT treatment session. However, these side effects are usually minor in nature and resolve within a week or two of treatment.
There is no downtime or recovery period necessary after your superficial radiotherapy treatment session. However, we may provide you with some special instructions on how to care for the treatment area after your treatment.
The goal of superficial radiotherapy is to eliminate skin cancer cells with the SRT treatment regimen. This may require a few treatments or many treatments depending on the patient. During your consultation, we’ll assess your condition in order to determine the optimal number of treatment sessions for your situation.
