Pediatric Dermatology

Children are more susceptible to certain skin conditions than adults, and they also experience skin conditions that are unique to their age. That's why it's important your child receives care from an experienced pediatric dermatologist.

Why Choose Goodman?

Pediatric dermatology is dermatologic care of pediatric patients of all ages. Goodman Dermatology, a board-certified dermatology practice, diagnoses and treats human skin conditions and illnesses for teens and children. Children are likely to suffer rashes, infections, growths or burns, while teen skin care is primarily focused on acne.

Goodman Dermatology treats serious skin diseases and conditions that can also affect children. According to the Society of Pediatric Dermatology, parents and caregivers often need to call a pediatric dermatologist because the child’s pediatrician doesn’t specialize in diseases of the skin. Goodman Dermatology treats skin cancer, acne, birthmarks, blistering diseases, and other skin care needs.

Types of Pediatric Dermatology Services

The treatment option that we recommend will depend on many factors. At Goodman Dermatology, we specialize in many advanced skin care techniques and offer a full range of skin care products that can be customized to the patient’s skin type. However, treatment always begins with a visual assessment and diagnosis of the skin. Then, we will be able to recommend a treatment for the following skin conditions:

  • Autoimmune: Autoimmune conditions are particularly common in young children, whose immune systems are still developing. In most cases, these conditions can be managed with medications.
  • Birthmarks: Birthmarks are often harmless, but some patients choose to pursue treatment because they can affect the clarity and texture of the skin. These are apparent from birth, but also fade over time in most cases.
  • Blisters: Blisters can cause a range of symptoms and may originate from various conditions and infections, including injury, allergic reactions, immune diseases or infections.
  • Contact Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a form of eczema that occurs when the skin makes contact with an irritant. This can be a chemical, medication, cosmetic product, or other object.
  • Cradle Cap: This condition causes scaly, rough patches of skin on an infant’s scalp. It often clears up on its own, although special shampoos can help eliminate symptoms.
  • Diaper Rash: Diaper rashes are a common condition for any diaper-wearing child. Relief may involve switching to non-irritating diapers or using topical medications.
  • Eczema: Eczema has many different forms, and often creates red, itchy patches on the skin.
  • Hemangiomas: These “birthmarks” often develop shortly after birth, and may require drainage or surgical removal.
  • Hives: Hives are a skin rash that is caused by an irritant, such as food or cosmetic products.
  • Moles: Moles are generally harmless, but when they develop quickly or grow abnormally, they can be a sign of skin cancer.
  • Molluscum: This viral skin infection resembles chicken pox, causing bumps to appear all over the body. They are, however, harmless.
  • Rosacea: Rosacea is a condition that resembles acne, causing red, pus-filled bumps to appear on the skin.
  • Skin Cancer: Surprisingly, children can be affected by skin cancer, especially if they have a predisposition. Limiting your child’s sun exposure during the hot afternoon hours can help minimize the risk.
  • Skin Exam: A full-body skin exam is the best way to detect skin cancer early and keep an eye on developing skin conditions and symptoms.
  • Vascular Abnormalities: Vascular abnormalities often appear shortly after birth. They are often benign, but they are frequently misdiagnosed. Drainage is often the best approach for treatment.
  • Warts: Warts are a common condition, but once developed, can spread quickly if not treated. These can be particularly common in children.
