Goodman Dermatology Residency Program
Didactic Training Schedule
2025-2026 PCOM/Goodman Dermatology residency programs offer a comprehensive didactic curriculum to ensure residents gain a deep understanding of the field.
Core Curriculum Lectures:
- Textbook Review: Our program assigns weekly sections of core dermatology textbooks (like Bolognia and Wolverton assignments given by week) for residents to review as a group with faculty. This ensures a systematic and thorough coverage of dermatologic diseases.
- Lectures: Experts in various subspecialties within dermatology deliver lectures on general dermatology, complex medical dermatology, dermatologic oncology, pediatric dermatology, dermoscopy, surgical dermatology, and cosmetic dermatology.
Specialized Didactics:
- DR ANAND and team at Skinpath Solutions: Dermatopathology: This is a crucial component, often involving:
- Multi-headed Microscope Sessions: Residents review unknown glass slides with dermatopathology faculty, learning to identify various skin conditions at a microscopic level.
- Didactic Lectures: Covering the fundamentals of dermatopathology and correlating with scope sessions.
- Unknown Slide Review: Residents practice diagnosing cases from clinical images and discussing differential diagnoses.
- DR HAMMEL: Dermatologic Surgery: Lectures and demonstrations covering all aspects of dermatologic surgery, including biopsies, excisions, Mohs surgery, and complex repairs (like grafts and flaps). Virtual grand rounds local and nationally, invites sent by Dr Goodman
- DR RUPLEY: Cosmetic Dermatology: lectures and hands-on workshops on procedures like neuromodulators, fillers, lasers, and sclerotherapy.
- DR LOUIS: Pediatric Dermatology: lectures and case discussions on dermatologic conditions in children.
Interactive & Case-Based Learning:
- MONTHLY meeting (typically first Thursday of each month)
- Grand Rounds: This involves presentations of interesting or instructive patient cases, followed by discussion
- Lectures: Invited guests to give informative lectures on a variety of topics.
- Clinical-Pathologic Correlation (CPC) Conferences: Interesting or challenging cases from clinic or hospital consult services are presented, discussing the clinical findings alongside dermatopathology results.
- Case Conferences: Faculty and residents present classic, interesting, unusual, and unknown cases encountered in clinics, discussing differential diagnoses, evaluation strategies, and treatment plans.
- “Kodachrome”: Presentation of clinical images of various cutaneous diseases, where residents describe the image, give a differential diagnosis, and discuss key points regarding the correct diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment.
- Morbidity and Mortality (M&M) Conference: Residents and faculty discuss cases with complications, focusing on quality improvement and patient safety.
- Journal Club: Resident-led discussions where residents critically appraise and review articles from recent dermatologic literature (e.g., Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology).
Professional Development & Other Topics:
- Aqua, Goodman Dermatology, and PCOM offer Professional Development: Lectures and workshops on topics such as billing/coding, ethics, professionalism, diversity, wellness, leadership, emotional intelligence, and successful negotiation.
- Wellstar North Fulton – Multi-Disciplinary Tumor Board: Meetings to discuss complex patient cases, often involving faculty from dermatology, hematology/oncology, pathology, radiation oncology, and surgical oncology.
- Research Symposium at Congress of Clinical Dermatology at the end of year: Opportunities for residents and faculty to present their research findings
Self-Directed Learning:
- While formal didactics are structured, residents are generally expected to engage in significant self-directed learning, including additional reading from textbooks and journals.
The blend of these didactic types aims to provide a comprehensive, well-rounded education, preparing residents for all aspects of dermatologic practice and board examinations here at PCOM/Goodman Dermatology Residency.
