Molecular Testing

If you have been diagnosed with melanoma, or are seeking a diagnosis, we may recommend molecular testing. This advanced service is available at our Goodman Dermatology locations in Roswell, Marietta / East Cobb, Woodstock and Dawsonville, GA.

What is Molecular Testing?

Molecular testing is an advanced diagnostic and prognostic tool available to melanoma patients. As melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, we believe that patients should have as much information made available to them as possible regarding their condition. With molecular testing, we can perform an incredibly detailed analysis on a tumor. If you have not been diagnosed with melanoma, this process will enable us to easily determine whether your growth is cancerous or not.

If you have already been diagnosed with melanoma, the molecular testing process can reveal important details about your condition. Perhaps most importantly, it analyzes your genetics to determine the risk of your skin cancer spreading into other areas of the body. We can then use this information to further tailor your treatment plan and provide you with the best plan of care possible.

How Much Does Molecular Testing Cost?

The cost of your molecular testing will vary depending on your condition, and may be covered by insurance. At Goodman Dermatology, we understand that each patient is entirely unique. With different skin types and treatment needs, each patient deserves a personalized treatment that is designed with them in mind. For these reasons, we are not able to provide an exact cost for treatment until we have the opportunity to assess your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan.

During your consultation, we will discuss your needs in order to determine this treatment plan and inform you of the cost of your molecular testing. To make our treatments more affordable for our patients, we are proud to offer financing options through CareCredit®.

What is the Molecular Testing Like? Decision DX

Molecular testing is a process no different than a biopsy for the patient. Like other skin cancer diagnosis techniques, we will remove a piece of the cancerous growth to examine. We then perform a highly specialized molecular analysis to determine your risk for developing melanoma after it has been treated, as well as your risk for the spreading of your condition. With these results, we will be able to discuss future treatment options in more detail.

Are There Any Side Effects After Molecular Testing?

There are no side effects after molecular testing, with the exception of very minor scarring where the cancerous growth has been removed for testing.

Is There Any Downtime Required After Molecular Testing?

There is no downtime required after molecular testing.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect After Molecular Testing?

After your initial appointment, it may take a few weeks for us to gather and assess the results of your molecular testing. Since this is not a treatment for skin cancer, we will discuss treatment options following your molecular testing in order to provide you with a treatment plan that fits your needs.
